DOI string from ACM form confirmation Abstract Stereoscopic tabletops collocate both user interaction and visualization spaces, fostering more natural freehand interaction metaphors to manipulate 3D virtual content. Thanks to a non-intrusive tracking solution, based on depth cameras, users can interact and manipulate virtual objects using both hands. In this position paper, we perform a comparative study of one multi-touch and four mid-air interaction techniques assigning the seven degrees of freedom (translation, rotation and uniform scaling) of 3D manipulation, symmetrically or asymmetrically between both hands.

3D on Tabletops

Current tabletop systems are increasingly dealing with 3D applications. Users using these tabletops have to interact with 3D models to accomplish their tasks. These tabletop systems have to provide interaction techniques which allow effective and accurate manipulations of 3D data. Usually, tabletops only provide a 2D input space, namely the table surface, which is why 3D interactions may become...

Design Choices and Their Implications for 3D Mid-Air Manipulation Techniques

Manipulation is one of the most important tasks required in virtual environments and thus it has been thoroughly studied for widespread input devices such as mice or multi-touch screens. Nowadays, the Kinect sensor has turned mid-air interaction into another affordable and popular way of interacting. Mid-air interaction enables the possibility of interacting remotely without any physical contac...

Combining Virtual Environments and Direct Manipulation for Architectural Modeling

In this paper we present an environment for conceptual design which mimics the interaction of designers with physical mockups. We present novel three dimensional on-and-above-the-surface interactive techniques which combine asymmetric bimanual operations with multi-touch direct manipulation on a flat surface and depth cameras. These take advantage of a continuous interaction space to create and...

Relative and absolute mappings for rotating remote 3D objects on multi-touch tabletops

The use of human fingers as an object selection and manipulation tool has raised significant challenges when interacting with direct-touch tabletop displays. This is particularly an issue when manipulating remote objects in 3D environments as finger presses can obscure objects at a distance that are rendered very small. Techniques to support remote manipulation either provide absolute mappings ...

An Empirical Investigation of Gaze Selection in Mid-Air Gestural 3D Manipulation

In this work, we investigate gaze selection in the context of mid-air hand gestural manipulation of 3D rigid bodies on monoscopic displays. We present the results of a user study with 12 participants in which we compared the performance of Gaze, a Raycasting technique (2D Cursor) and a Virtual Hand technique (3D Cursor) to select objects in two 3D mid-air interaction tasks. Also, we compared se...
